A Study on Contouring Error at the Turning Point in CNC Machine Tools with Linear Encoder Feedback

Lost motion of a drive system of CNC machine tools appears at the turning point is an issue on the manufacturing process of die and mold. Usual compensation method for the lost motion can cause dimple error on the cutting surface when it is used with linear scale feedback system. This paper proposes a new method for controlling the lost motion of the feed drive system with linear scale feed back. Using this method, the contouring error at the turning point with the linear feedback can be suppressed in a certain level.
