Method for changing the stiffness of machine tool supports

Abstract

The stiffness at contacted interface has a large influence on the stiffness of machine tool supports. In this research, two methods are attempted to change the stiffness of the support by changing the contact stiffness. One is to slant the interface and the other is to insert thin foils. The stiffness of the support was decreased by 50% with the interface slanted by 45 degrees. The stiffness of the support tends to increase with aluminum foils and tin foils.
