Heat treatment on-the-machine tools using YAG laser source

This study presents a laser heat treatment of steels using a YAG laser beam on-the- machine tools. An optical fiber is used in order to transmit the laser light from a source to workpieces. Experiments are conducted to investigate the quenching characteristics of various die steels using a YAG laser beam. As a result, the influence of carbon and chromium contained in the material on the hardening is clarified. Furthermore, it is also shown that the laser heat treatment of pre-hardened steels is effective to increase their hardness. Tempering hardness of hot die steels is confirmed after laser hardening.
